Melis Erdem received her Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Architecture in Istanbul and her Master’s Degree in Barcelona. After 2 years of nourishing collaborations in Barcelona she came back to Istanbul in 2017 to dedicate herself to her artistic projects. She had her first solo exhibition titled ‘Secrets on Foil’ in 2023 and her second solo exhibition titled ‘The Half Bright Side’ in 2025 at Simbart Projects.
Despite her architectural background she plays with chaotic figures to interpret imperfections of life in contrast of the perfection and technicality of the architectural world. In her paintings and sculptures, she focuses on finding balance within the chaos and accepting gently the natural cycle of growth and decay. In Erdem’s works, binary forms mostly stand out. While the artist plays with the balances between symmetry and asymmetry, she also deals with the dialogue between internal conflict, division, opposition, balance and chaos. These opposites, which seem to be different from each other but actually complement each other, are reborn in the works as symbols of creativity, innovation, discovery and transformation.
